Hoping to escape the long winter across many parts of Europe and North America, delegates arriving for BIO-Europe Spring 2010 in sunny Spain were greeted by a sudden winter storm that covered Barcelona under a blanket of snow.

Throughout the afternoon as the storm gathered force, delegates snapped photos with cell phones to record the freak phenomenon that Spanish hosts assured was a “once in every 50 years” event.

By the end of the conference program conditions had become so serious the Barcelona police closed off the center of the city and the 26 buses expected to carry delegates to a reception at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya could not make it through snarled traffic.

Inspired by the spirit of collaboration at this annual partnering meeting produced and organized by EBD Group, the hundreds of delegates suddenly stuck at the Centre Convencions Internacional Barcelona (CCIB) quickly cooperated to create an impromptu social networking event in the exhibition hall that went on into the early evening._AVI1131

Having weathered the adversity together, delegates awoke on Tuesday to bright sun and the rare spectacle of snow covered hills surrounding the city.
