12,500 one-to-one meetings confirms value of partnering ‘in good times and bad’

All the indicators were up, including a markedly upbeat mood among the 2,500 participants, as BIO-Europe 2009 got underway in Vienna.
Over 1,400 companies from more than 50 countries were represented at the 15th annual edition of what has become the largest partnering event in life sciences outside of the United States.
In her welcoming address, the President of the EBD Group, Carola Schropp, noted the change in spirit.
“Last year at BIO-Europe, it was impossible to escape an encroaching sense of doom for our industry,” she said. “Companies were suddenly stopped short by the collapse of financial markets and the retreat of private equity.”

BIO-Europe 2009 delegates get busy using partneringONE®
Over 12,500 one-to-one partnering meetings were scheduled for BIO-Europe 2009, a startling 25 percent increase that Schropp attributed to the enduring value of partnering. “As I stand here today, a full year later, I am pleased to see many encouraging signs of a returning optimism,” she said.
“In good times and bad, it will be alliances, licensing agreements, co-development programs and other forms of collaboration between companies that will ultimately take us forward,” she predicted.
She reported that 60 percent of delegates will participate from 6 to as many as 20 meetings, while the remaining 30 percent will have as many as 45 meetings. One company had scheduled a record 168 meetings.
