BIO-Europe Spring®: Intensive partnering March 16–18 in Milan

February 2nd, 2009 - Conference:

An increased intensity in partnering was the response of life science executives in the face of the meltdown in financial markets. The number of meetings per participant spiked 25 percent at the BIO-Europe 2008 event in Mannheim, Germany, with a record 10,000 one-to-one partnering meetings.

Coming on the heels of this event, BIO-Europe Spring® 2009 is continuing the accelerated pace of partnering as executives continue to pass through challenging market conditions and seek out alternative strategies for growing their companies. EBD Group reported that registrations to date already have surpassed 800 representing companies from 40 countries worldwide while more than 1,400 attendees are expected at the event.

EBD Group’s President, Carola Schropp, remarked that “despite the downbeat economic climate we are seeing a strong increase in biotech companies wanting to present to potential pharma partners at BIO-Europe Spring as well as an upsurge in the number of partnering meeting requests. With debilitated financial markets the fortunes of many biotechs rests with developing and nurturing partnerships.”

“BIO-Europe Spring is happening at a critical time in the lives of many biotech firms, and we are happy to help provide a way for companies and the industry as a whole to keep the engines of innovation moving,” Schropp added.

Managing the thousands of meeting interactions at the conference will be the highly touted partneringONE™ system. Currently the partnering engine for 14 life science conferences, partneringONE generates over 30,000 partnering meetings annually and has become an important catalyst for the growth of the bio-economy.

Commenting on the upcoming event, Professor Rossi Bernardi, Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Human Capital, The City of Milan, said, “The biotech industry in Italy is still young, but is growing fast with a strong pipeline of 84 products in clinical trials. Biotech innovation in Italy is alive and well and offers many exciting opportunities for partnering and investment.

“This is the second time we are hosting BIO-Europe Spring, and we have come to view this partnering event as a strategic catalyst for fostering the future growth of our industry through collaborations with the worldwide bio-pharma industry.”

“We are excited that BIO-Europe Spring is returning to Italy. The conference is a unique opportunity for leaders of the global biotech and pharma community to meet in a setting conducive to doing business,” said Edoardo Richter, Director, International Division, Angelini Group. “As an Italian pharmaceutical company, the BIO-Europe Spring event helps to shine more light on the rapid progress of our industry, the exceptional quality of our scientific programs and the great potential for partnering with Italian firms.”

According to the report “Biotechnology in Italy 2008, Strategic and Financial Analysis”, by Blossom Associati-Assobiotec, the Italian biotech industry is composed of 228 companies with research and development activities generating EUR 4.8 billion in revenues. The industry attracted EUR 1.3 billion in capital investments in 2006, and employs over 26,000 people of which 6,652 are engaged in R&D.
